Good food on a budget -

This is a fantastic book which underlines Jack's amazing story. The book is well-set out and contains suggestions for everyone. I've made a couple of the recipes for my family - one boy 6, hubby 37. Both are ALWAYS hungry! loved the food. Jack's story and approach reminds me of my mum's situation when I was a teen and whilst I'm not having to budget quite as much as either my mum or Jack had to, it's taught me that I can save money whilst cooking lovely food - buy it, it's fab!

Every student should have one! -

I have tried quite a few of the recipes, and found them v. good. Ideal for students or those on a tight budget, and very adaptable. One quibble, I can't believe that tinned potatoes are cheaper than a bag of raw spuds! Otherwise, a sensible and down-to-earth book.

Truly money-saving recipes and practical advice. -

Jack Monroe has not only talked the talk, but walked the walk. Living on a budget of £10 a week for food meant she had to be inventive and resourceful if she was to eat well and keep healthy.

Her money saving recipes are remarkably down to earth and practical, focusing on foods that are cheap, nutritious and readily available.

Jack suggests growing herbs and chillies to help the budget to stretch and favours basic ingredients - sunflower oil over olive for example, long-grain rice over arborio.

There is good advice on the basic equipment needed for a kitchen, and a how to shop guide to ensure that the cash-strapped cook gets the right items in their basket.

Having tried many of the recipes, there are very few that won't be making a re-appearance. Jack's Peach and Chickpea curry was far more than the sum of its parts, and the Creamy Salmon Pasta with a Chilli Lemon Kick is set to become a favourite. The salmon being a jar of salmon fish paste. An innovative, valuable book.
