Winnie is full of mad-cap schemes and plans to put her magic to good use. Wilbur is her long-suffering best friend, and everyone's favourite moggy. Join them both in this fantastic small-format gift edition. From Winnie's knicker shop, where spiders sew up the lacy trims, to Winnie's creativity in the kitchen where she often cooks up such delicacies as turkey tonsil titbits, giggles are guaranteed! This new colour collection contains eight stories that have previously appeared in Winnie Goes Batty and Winnie's Big Catch. Perfect for young readers who are ready to enjoy longer stories with more narrative content, complemented by vibrant full colour illustrations by the brilliant Korky Paul. The Winnie fiction series has been heralded as 'a winner' by The Bookseller and 'hilarious' by Primary Times.
My kids love the Winnie books and have a story read out most nights. The colour illustrations are fab for the four-year-old, the seven-year-old enjoys the storylines, and everyone likes yelling Abracadabra at the appropriate point. We particularly like the Laura Owen-penned ones for the extra character they give Winnie and inventive use of language. More Winnie!
Winnie is much less likeable -
I've always been a fan of Winnie the Witch - fabulous illustrations and Valerie Thomas brought a warmth to Winnie's character. The perfect team. However, a new author is penning these Early Readers and I find Winnie so much less likeable. It's hard to put my finger on it but the tone is less positive throughout, negative wording and I find frequent use of terms such as 'blooming heck' completely inappropriate for this age group. In fact, she uses the term blooming on almost every page e.g. She's blooming well here already or What the blooming...? It seems as though the author is trying to be cool with the kids but I think parents comparing the original author with the new Laura Owen will find these stories wanting. I purchased this for bedtime reading for my 4-year-old son and had to censor many of the phrases. You could buy it for older children but I wouldn't want mine to be using the language and slang that Winnie uses here. 2 stars for Korky Paul.
