A Song for Summer -

This was the first of Eva Ibbotson's young adult books that I read. It is (so far, for I have not read them all yet,) the best.

It sweeps me into the world I love, and is gripping until the last, never predictable, like so many romances. For it is a romance at heart. Not because of the love story, which is merely a stage for characterial development, but because the prose is rich and romantic and the landscape in which it is set is filled with honeysuckle that you can taste, this a romance in the sense that Lorna Doone is, as Blackmore himself writes: 'This is to be considered a romance due to its ravishing landscape and optimistic nature'- forgive me if those are not the exact words, I am doing this from memory.

Yes this is a romance. A real romance. By a real author.
