This is a beautiful story of love, commitment and the flowering of human spirit against the backdrop of apartheid in South Africa. Introduced by former Children's Laureate Michael Rosen, Journey to Jo'Burg by Beverley Naidoo is an inspiring and completely compelling tale.

Frightened that their baby sister Dineo will die, thirteen-year-old Naledi and her brother Tiro run away from their grandmother to Johannesburg to find their mother, who works there as a maid. But at every turn are the grim realities of apartheid ? the pass laws, bantustans, racism and the breakdown of family life...

A thought-provoking story that was and continues to be widely read in schools all around the country, this gentle, eye-opening and award-winning book is essential reading for every young fiction lover.

Journey to Jo'burg -

This is quite a short book that contains information about apartheid in addition to the fictional story. While the theme might push the book into the 11+ age group, the level that the writing is pitched at is considerably lower in my opinion. Indeed, my children studied it in school in Year 4 when they were aged 8.
