With three books each spread across one of 12 different reading levels, Key Words with Peter and Jane uses some of the most frequent words in the English language as a starting point for learning to read successfully and confidently.

Series A introduces new words, Series B provides further practice of these words and then Series C links reading with writing and phonics. All the words introduced in Series A and B are then reinforced in Series C.

Scientifically researched and world renowned, the books follow Peter and Jane as they explore and have adventures. The traditional Ladybird style of artwork makes these great for parents to read along with children, too.

Great books to build reading confidence! -

We live in Sweden and I have been buying books in English from UK for my daughter, among which are from Book People. She will start Grade 1 in autumn and English is her third language. Right now she is at Oxford Reading Tree 5-6 stage and usually read new books in low voice for the first time but when it comes to this series she reads so loudly and fluently showing that she is so "sure" and "confident" and "happy".
I don't think the series are particularly interesting but very effective in leaning key words for reading and build up confidence. Impressive!

Dated but effective -

These books are dated, sexist and a bit dull but they work and I'm pleased I bought them for my 5-year-old daughter. These have led into much more successful and enthusiastic reading, and the use of other Ladybird books at a level matched to where I know she is in this set.

I think the Ladybird 'Read With Me' Kate and Tom books are better for the same thing (more modern, less sexist, more interesting) although without the same design charm. I use both series and Book People should probably look at selling a box set of the Read With Me books.

Thanks for your review

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. These books have been around for a long time and may include some observations that are 'of the time'. They have not been adapted since publication and we believe they will help children learn to read and can provide a good starting point for teaching them about positive social changes.

Ladybird: Key Words Collection -

These books are excellent for teaching children to read as the words are repetitive and therefore helps a child to remember new words. I used these books to teach my children who are now 18, 22 and 27 to read before they started school and also my grandchild who is age 5 but whom started reading these books at age 4 before she started school. I would definitely recommend them as a starting point to learning to read.

The Best Books for Beginners -

I have taught several children to read using these books and by making/buying the flashcards to match the text. Children gain confidence and a sense of achievement in being able to read these and turn pages and stop at a suitable place. There aren't any better books for this out there. I haven't had to work through the whole series yet to get children moving on to reading more interesting stories from the library but it's nice to have the whole set. I think there's a certain magic to Peter and Jane.
