Zen and the Art of Murder is the first in a gripping crime series set in Germany. A huge favourite in Europe already, it follows Louise Boni, a 42-year-old divorcee and maverick chief inspector, as she investigates disturbing cases and struggles with demons of her own...

Part of the Black Forest crime squad, she's asked to trail a Japanese monk who is wandering through snow-covered wastelands near Freiburg; dressed only in sandals and a cowl.

When Louise catches him, she discovers the man is injured and fleeing unknown evil. Her own team comes under fire and soon the investigation evolves into a child trafficking case... These crimes could change the course of her own life.

Set against the backdrop of the Rhine borderlands and the Black Forest, this is a compelling mystery that you'll will have you racing through the pages.

Bottini has placed a beachtowel on the European Detective sun loungers ! -

Well so what's new about a divorced, alcoholic, middle aged detective who doesn't get on with their boss and has inner demons ? Well actually just about everything because the prose is structured differently, and the plot moves totally erratically to what we are used to in the "normal" crime novel. I think this be something to do with it being translated from the German but it must also be to do with Bottinin's writing. The setting is atmospheric, and the mystery intriguing - the central character is hugely flawed but inspired.
