In 2011, the world will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Queen - one of the most innovative, glamorous, and influential bands in history. Over the course of the band's career, they have grossed 170 million album sales worldwide, have written 18 number one hits, and performed 700 concerts. While some acts enjoy a forte of incredible showmanship, a virtuoso instrumentalist, a strong, charismatic leader, or a prolific sole songwriter, Queen beholds all of these strengths. Although Freddie Mercury and Brian May are recognized as the prime songwriters, each of the members have penned number one hits, including classics such as "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Freddie Mercury), "Another One Bites the Dust" (John Deacon), "A Kind of Magic" (Roger Taylor), and "We Will Rock You" (Brian May). The fates brought the four creative and cerebral youths together in London in 1971 (Mercury was by then an established fine and graphic artist, May was enveloped in the study of astrophysics, Roger Taylor enrolled in dental school, and John studying electronics). Since then, they have made history with their sophisticated fusion of operatic expression, theatrical performance, symphonic melody, and raw rock-and- roll. Beginning with their debut Queen in 1973 (EMI/Electra Records), the band took the UK by storm, then conquered the United States along with rest of the world, serving as pioneers of stadium rock and enjoying commercial success and momentum well into the 1980s (marked by the famous Live Aid appearance in 1985) through the early 1990s. The whirlwind took a startling pause when singer Freddie Mercury passed away from AIDS on November 24, 1991. The living members have forged ahead and remain great music makers until this day. "The Complete Illustrated Lyrics" is the first book of its kind. Never before has there been a complete Queen lyric book. The hundreds of images that accompany the songs range from handwritten lyrics to rare photographs from the stage to the studio. Also included is a complete discography of the band, pairing each song to the album on which it was originally released. Designed by the band's longtime creative director, Richard Gray, this book is as true to the band as can be, carrying with it the flamboyance, expression, and depth that Queen embodies as writers and performers. If there is one book for a fan of the band to possess, this is the one.

Glasgow Caledonian University and Waverley Books are delighted to announce the publication of a new edition of the world famous "Glasgow Cookery Book". This much sought-after book is finally available again, revised and updated for 2010, the centenary year of its first publication, and this new edition has lost none of its homely charm. "The Glasgow Cookery Book" started its life in 1910 as the textbook of The Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science - fondly dubbed the Do. (or Dough) School by Glasgow citizens - and was put together by the school's staff to document the recipes they taught in class. However, its reputation for dependable and economical recipes ensured that its influence spread far beyond the walls of the Glasgow college. Its practical and reliable cookery advice became famous worldwide. Scottish mothers bought it for daughters and daughters-in-law, and it became an essential purchase for young brides and brides-to-be. Based on the 1975 metric edition, revised and updated, we've taken care to preserve Do. School favourites - such as haggis, pot roast, Dutch roast, cheese scones, Dundee cake, Victoria sandwich, gingerbread and shortbread - while updating for the modern cook. Its practical approach to cooking on a budget is as relevant now as it ever was. In addition there's a fascinating preface by Glasgow crime writer Alex Gray. Alex's Aunt Ella was a student at the college in 1909. Ella Cowan's own handwritten college jotters survive, are dated 1909, and according to GCU archivist Carole McCallum, are the first definitive proof available that the 1910 book was based on the notes taught in class. The introduction includes archive photographs and samples from Ella Cowan's meticulously written books. Carole also contributes an enlightening social history of the college, in an accessible and highly readable introduction to what was known affectionately to students as "The Purple Book". This book has been updated with the enthusiastic assistance of ex-students and staff of The Queen's College Glasgow (formerly known as the Glasgow and west of scotland Scotland College of Domestic science).

The Queen of Spades and Selected Works is a brand new English translation of two of Alexander Pushkin's greatest short stories, 'The Queen of Spades' and 'The Stationmaster', together with extracts from Yevgeny Onegin and Boris Godunov, and a selection of his poetic work. 'The Queen of Spades' ('Pikovaya dama'), originally published in Russian in 1834, is one of the most famous tales in Russian literature, and inspired the eponymous opera by Tchaikovsky; in 'The Stationmaster' ('Stantsionnyy smotritel"), originally published in Russian in The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin (Povesti pokoynogo Ivana Petrovicha Belkina) in 1830, he reworks the parable of the Prodigal Son; the hugely entertaining 'Tsar Nikita and his Forty Daughters' is a bawdier early poem; and the deeply moving narrative poem 'The Bronze Horseman', inspired by a St Petersburg statue of Peter the Great, is one of his most influential works. The volume also includes a selection of his best lyric poetry. Translated by Anthony Briggs, The Queen of Spades and Selected Works is the perfect introduction to Alexander Pushkin's finest work.
